Entry: Aibo - The Skitzo Dog Sunday, July 18, 2004

It's Saturday! Yay! I think. Well, I survived my first week at Kaleidoscope. I'm getting paid next to nothing, but I made some money, so that's cool. Instead of relating my whole week to you, I'll just talk about Aibo. Now, my class in the afternoon was called Robots, in which hyper 5 year old boys complete highly complex robotic projects, like drawing pictures of robots, playing with RC cars, and watching me glue gun little wooden "robots" with random things (crayons, goldfish nets, tuning forks, etc.) attached to them via a complex system of rubber bands. Oh yea, and they played with legos.

Anyway, on Friday, one of the kids' mom brought in an Aibo robot. For those of you who don't know, Aibo is a little robotic dog made by Sony which retails for about 1800 bucks. Man, what a rip off!!! Anyway, the kid's dad works for a company that supplies the microchips for Sony, so the company got their own Aibo as a sort of thank you. Therefore, This Kid's (I have officially named this kid This Kid) mom brought in Aibo to show the class. He was kinda cool, I mean, he made pseudo-dog sounds, and had blinky lights, and enjoyed kicking a little ball. However, when I talked to Thiskids Mom (This Kid's mom), she explained that there was a lot more to Aibo than this.

Apparently Aibo's are so advanced that they come with an off switch! This is the main feature of the Aibo, and what makes it cost approxamately $1750 more than a Furby. Oh, and it also has this computer chip that allows it to have a personality and "grow up". Thiskids Mom (to be respectful, I shall now refer to her as Mrs. Mom) explained to me that since this Aibo was a company Aibo, and had consequently been with a new family every week, it had become neurotic, and had had to be shipped back to Japan three times to get it repaired. When even robotic dogs are having psychological issues, you know the world is fucked.

So, yea. Not much else. Now for the blurbs with colons after them:

Stuff I have to do:
Eagle Scout Project
AP Chem homework
Summer reading
Boy Scout Merit Badges
Practice the (outrageously hard) Senior Districts music)

Quote of the entry:
From a 5-year-old in Robots who had just been introduced to Aibo:
"I saw one of those on eBay!!!"
